Helmet Series

Human beings are a vulnerable species with an aggressive streak. From early in our development, we found it a necessity to develop protective covering against those we hunt and those who hunt us. In every part of the world, humans have developed different types and forms of armored protection. The challenge presented by new materials and technology is met with body armor and weapons becoming more inventive and fantastic.

It is the fantastic that I address in my series of Helmet drawings. When viewed as individual objects, they can be seen as marvelously creative inventions of design. A Japanese Acorn Helmet referencing nature and reproduction; a Spider Helmet and Italian Visored Helmet looking much like strange mutated insects and the chain face veils, misdirected necklaces, are singularly arresting.

There is a chilling beauty in these Helmets that both transcends and incorporates their intended use.
